Frequently Asked Questions

For a first visit, we recommend El Calafate and El Chaltén, two complementary bases for exploring Los Glaciares National Park. El Calafate is the gateway to Perito Moreno Glacier, while El Chaltén offers trails with views of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Travelers with more time can add Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, to explore southern forests, coastal landscapes, and the Beagle Channel. Cascada Expediciones offers itineraries connecting these experiences according to your interests and available time.
For the hiking and nature itineraries featured here, October to April is the main travel season. The best dates depend on your chosen activities: mountain hikes, glacier excursions, and wildlife experiences have different operating schedules. Cascada’s Los Glaciares National Park and Ushuaia programs operate during this period, although some activities change by month. Before choosing your dates, ask our team to confirm availability for the experiences you most want to include.
We recommend at least five days for a trip combining El Calafate and El Chaltén, allowing time for glacier experiences, hiking, and transfers. If you want to focus on one area, a four-day itinerary can provide a shorter introduction. Allow additional days to include Ushuaia or continue into Chile. Cascada’s options include a six-day Los Glaciares and Fitz Roy itinerary, a four-day trek in El Chaltén, and an eight-day Patagonia United journey combining Argentina with Torres del Paine.
Choose El Calafate if glaciers are your priority, especially Perito Moreno and boat-based excursions. Choose El Chaltén if hiking is central to your trip, with routes toward Laguna Torre, Laguna Los Tres, and viewpoints of Fitz Roy. For a varied first visit, we recommend combining both. Cascada’s Los Glaciares National Park & Fitz Roy Trek brings together mountain trails and a Perito Moreno Glacier experience in one itinerary.
Yes. Visiting Perito Moreno does not require joining an ice trek. Depending on your chosen excursion, you can experience the glacier from viewing walkways, by boat, or on a guided approach walk near its southern face. These options involve different levels of walking and should be selected according to your mobility and interests. Tell our team whether you prefer panoramic views, a closer approach, or an ice-trekking experience so we can recommend a suitable option.
Fitness requirements depend on the trail. Cascada’s trekking itineraries in El Chaltén include full-day mountain hikes, with uneven terrain, steep sections, and consecutive active days. Routes such as Laguna Los Tres require preparation and confidence walking for several hours. Before booking, review the distances, elevation gain, and walking times in your selected itinerary. Our team can help you assess which program best matches your experience and preferred pace.
Yes. Combining Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina with Torres del Paine in Chile offers a varied journey through Patagonia’s mountains, glaciers, and wildlife habitats. Cascada’s Patagonia United itinerary includes El Chaltén, El Calafate, and a stay at EcoCamp Patagonia. International transfers require time for travel and border formalities, so we recommend arranging the journey as a coordinated itinerary rather than treating the crossing as a short local transfer.
Our Argentine Patagonia programs include accommodation, ground transportation, guided activities, and the meals specified in each itinerary. Exact inclusions vary by program, including national park entrance fees, boat excursions, and specialist equipment for activities such as glacier trekking. Flights, travel insurance, tips, and personal purchases are not included. Transfers connecting Argentina with Torres del Paine or Puerto Natales may require a separate booking. Each tour page provides a detailed inclusion list.
For Cascada’s El Calafate and El Chaltén itineraries, the usual starting point is El Calafate Airport, followed by ground transportation as specified in your program. Our Ushuaia itinerary starts at Ushuaia Airport. Connections from Chilean Patagonia can also be arranged for selected journeys. Before purchasing flights, request the current transfer information and recommended flight times from our team to ensure your connections match your chosen itinerary.
Ushuaia adds forests, islands, and marine wildlife to an Argentine Patagonia journey. Cascada’s Tierra del Fuego & Ushuaia Explorer includes Tierra del Fuego National Park and a Beagle Channel navigation, with opportunities to observe sea lions and seabirds. Selected departures also include a Gable Island experience and penguin observation from the water near Martillo Island. Activities vary by season; in April, the Gable Island outing is replaced by a trek to Laguna Esmeralda.
Chilean Patagonia offers wildlife excursions, remote trekking, and journeys through fjords and channels. From Punta Arenas, you can go whale watching, visit the penguin colony on Magdalena Island, or connect with Puerto Williams for the Dientes de Navarino Trek. Farther north, Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park offers forest trails and accommodation at Caleta Gonzalo Lodge, with access through Puerto Montt. Expedition cruises explore Tierra del Fuego, while dedicated winter programs focus on puma tracking around Torres del Paine. Cascada Expediciones can help you combine these experiences according to your interests and available time.
The best season depends on your priorities. Cascada’s Magdalena Island penguin excursion operates from November to March, while its humpback whale-watching excursion operates from December to March. The Dientes de Navarino Trek has departures from November to March. Winter offers a different experience through dedicated puma-tracking programs. If you want to combine several activities, ask our team to identify dates when their operating seasons overlap.
From Punta Arenas, you can travel by boat toward the Francisco Coloane Marine and Coastal Protected Area to look for humpback whales. The journey also offers views of the Strait of Magellan and opportunities to observe other marine wildlife. Cascada’s Humpback Whale Watching excursion is a full-day experience lasting approximately 12–14 hours. Departures depend on operating schedules and weather, and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Magdalena Island, in the Strait of Magellan, is home to a colony of Magellanic penguins. Cascada’s Magellan Strait Penguin Adventure includes a boat journey from Punta Arenas and a visit to the island, where you can observe penguins in their natural habitat while following the designated visitor route. This seasonal excursion is an option for travelers seeking a wildlife experience without demanding hiking. Navigation and island access depend on weather and safety conditions.
Yes. Cascada offers a Patagonia Winter Puma Tracking Wildlife Adventure, focused on searching for pumas and observing the wildlife of Torres del Paine National Park. The program is based in Puerto Natales, with waterfront accommodation, making it an alternative to a stay inside the park. It is suited to travelers whose main interest is wildlife observation rather than a trekking itinerary. Ask our team about winter departures and arrangements; puma sightings cannot be guaranteed.
The Dientes de Navarino Trek is a remote mountain circuit on Navarino Island, near Puerto Williams. Cascada’s six-day program combines lodge accommodation with wilderness camping and guided trekking through forests, peat bogs, rocky passes, and exposed terrain. It is designed for experienced trekkers in excellent physical condition who are comfortable carrying personal equipment and camping without permanent facilities. Cold, rain, wind, and snow can occur even in summer.
Yes. Expedition cruises offer a way to explore southern Patagonia’s channels, glaciers, and coastal landscapes. Cascada’s Fjords of Tierra del Fuego itinerary connects Punta Arenas with Ushuaia and includes guided shore excursions. The route features Wulaia Bay and an attempted landing at Cape Horn when conditions permit. It is an option for travelers who want to combine time aboard a vessel with shorter explorations ashore. Routes and landings depend on weather and operational conditions.Yes. Expedition cruises offer a way to explore southern Patagonia’s channels, glaciers, and coastal landscapes. The route features Wulaia Bay and an attempted landing at Cape Horn when conditions permit. It is an option for travelers who want to combine time aboard a vessel with shorter explorations ashore. Routes and landings depend on weather and operational conditions.
Yes. Punta Arenas is the departure gateway for selected Antarctic air-cruises, combining a flight to Antarctica with an expedition voyage. Cascada offers the Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise, an eight-day itinerary exploring the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula. Although Antarctica is a separate destination from Patagonia, it can be considered as an extension to a southern Chile journey. Our team can help coordinate the itineraries and explain the required arrival arrangements.
The right trip length depends on the experiences you want to combine. Penguin watching near Punta Arenas is a half-day excursion, while whale watching requires a full day. Cascada’s Dientes de Navarino program takes six days, and the Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise takes eight days. Add time for travel between destinations and avoid tight connections after weather-dependent activities. Our team can recommend a realistic itinerary around your priorities.
Punta Arenas is the starting point for Cascada’s whale-watching and Magdalena Island excursions, as well as selected Antarctic air-cruises. For Navarino Island, the Dientes de Navarino Trek includes round-trip flights between Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams, plus local transfers. Each experience has specific arrival requirements. Before purchasing your flights, request the latest transfer information and arrival instructions from our team so your connections match your chosen itinerary.
EcoCamp Patagonia is a geodesic dome hotel inside Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile, with views of the park’s iconic granite towers. Its approach to sustainability includes electricity generated from solar and micro-hydropower, composting toilets, and on-site waste treatment. Combining dome accommodation with guided outdoor adventures and a welcoming community atmosphere, EcoCamp is a great option for travelers who want to explore Patagonia’s landscapes while enjoying comfortable beds, shared meals, and the company of fellow travelers.
Choose Wildlife Safari if you prefer staying at EcoCamp every night and selecting daily excursions according to your interests and activity level. Choose the W Trek for a multi-day hiking adventure featuring Torres del Paine’s iconic highlights, including the Towers Base, French Valley, and Grey Glacier. For a longer, more demanding trek, choose the O Circuit, which explores the quieter northern side of the Paine Massif and crosses John Gardner Pass before joining the W route. Both trekking programs combine nights at EcoCamp with accommodation along the trail and require preparation for consecutive hiking days.
For a first visit, we recommend considering at least five days to enjoy a varied introduction to Torres del Paine without concentrating your experience into just a few outings. A shorter stay can work if time is limited. When choosing your dates, remember that arrival and departure days are primarily dedicated to transfers, so count the full excursion days available between them. Our team can help match your stay to your preferred activities.
Yes. You do not need to be an experienced trekker to enjoy EcoCamp. The Wildlife Safari program offers gentler nature walks and scenic excursions alongside more demanding hikes. This makes it an option for couples or friends with different interests and fitness levels. Tell our team how long you feel comfortable walking and what terrain you prefer so we can help you choose suitable activities.
Yes. The Towers Base Trek can be undertaken from EcoCamp and is included in selected trekking itineraries and offered on scheduled Wildlife Safari days. It is a demanding full-day excursion of approximately 22 km, usually involving eight to ten hours of walking and a steep, rocky final ascent. If this hike is a priority, discuss your dates and fitness level with our team before booking.
EcoCamp offers Standard, Superior, Suite, and Suite Loft Domes. Standard Domes provide a compact accommodation option with shared bathroom facilities. Superior and Suite Domes have private bathrooms and more space, while Suite Loft Domes have two floors and accommodate up to four people, making them an option for families or friends traveling together. Your choice depends on your group size, budget, and preferred level of comfort.
Yes. EcoCamp welcomes children from age six, and Wildlife Safari is a good starting point for families looking for a mix of nature, wildlife, and outdoor activities. Suite Loft Domes offer space for up to four guests. Excursion eligibility depends on children’s ages and the demands of each activity, and some treks require additional private guiding. Share your children’s ages with our team so we can recommend an appropriate program.
Inclusions depend on the program. Wildlife Safari includes dome accommodation, the meals and guided excursions specified in the itinerary, national park entry, and transportation according to the published transfer schedule. Trekking programs also include the accommodation and services detailed for nights along the trail. Flights, travel insurance, tips, and personal purchases are not included. Check your chosen tour’s inclusion list for the exact services covered.
Travelers usually reach EcoCamp through Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas, followed by a shared ground transfer to Torres del Paine National Park. Connections from El Calafate, Argentina, can also be arranged according to the itinerary and available transport services. Before purchasing your flights, please request our latest transfer schedule from our team to ensure your arrival and departure times align with the transfers available for your program.
EcoCamp’s excursions offer opportunities to look for guanacos, foxes, condors, and other native wildlife in Torres del Paine and the surrounding area. If seeing pumas is a main reason for your visit, consider a dedicated Puma Tracking program or ask about adding a Puma Encounter experience. These outings focus specifically on searching for pumas with specialist guides. Wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
We recommend four days for a first visit focused on Atacama’s main highlights, and a week for a more active exploration. Cascada Expediciones’ 4-day Atacama Desert Explorer introduces the region through guided excursions, while the 7-day Atacama Desert Trekking Expedition offers longer walks through desert valleys and Andean landscapes. Your ideal trip length depends on your interests, preferred pace, and how much hiking you would like to do.
Atacama can be visited year-round. For a balance between warmer daytime conditions and less severe nighttime cold, we suggest considering spring or autumn. Summer brings warmer days, although rainfall can affect highland excursions between December and March. Winter offers another opportunity to explore, but early mornings and nights can be very cold.
For a first visit, we recommend Moon Valley, the Tatio Geysers, the Atacama Salt Flat, and the Miscanti and Miñiques highland lagoons. Together, they reveal the region’s contrasting geology, wildlife, and landscapes, while visits to Andean villages add cultural context. To make your trip even more memorable, optional add-ons include a stargazing tour, a visit to a rural high-altitude vineyard, or a hot-air balloon ride over the desert. Cascada’s itineraries combine several of these highlights, with additional experiences available on request and subject to availability.
Choose a sightseeing-focused itinerary if you want to discover Atacama’s landscapes through vehicle-based excursions and shorter walks. Choose a trekking adventure if walking is a central part of your holiday and you are comfortable with demanding days at altitude. Cascada’s Atacama Desert Trekking Expedition includes hikes of up to 22 km, with some days involving five to eight hours on foot, while returning to a hotel in San Pedro each evening.
Yes. Cascada’s Atacama Desert Explorer is designed around sightseeing and walks at a normal pace, rather than strenuous trekking. It is an option for travelers interested in scenery, wildlife, and culture without long hiking days. However, some excursions reach high elevations, so physical effort is only one consideration when choosing your itinerary.
Altitude is an important consideration when planning a trip to Atacama. San Pedro sits at approximately 2,400 metres above sea level, while excursions to the highland lagoons and Tatio Geysers reach approximately 4,200–4,300 metres. Even outings with little walking can therefore involve significant altitude exposure. Let our team know about your previous experience at altitude so we can discuss the itinerary’s demands and the time available to settle in before higher excursions.
Calama Airport is the arrival point for Cascada’s Atacama Desert Explorer and Atacama Desert Trekking Expedition. Both programs include onward ground transportation to San Pedro de Atacama, the base for your stay. Before booking flights, check the arrival and departure requirements of your chosen itinerary with our team, as transfer arrangements and recommended flight times differ between programs.
Our Atacama programs include accommodation, ground transportation, guided activities, and the meals specified in each itinerary. Exact inclusions vary by program, including entrance fees and whether excursions are private or shared. Flights, insurance, tips, and optional activities are not included, but our team can provide information and guidance to help you plan your trip. Each tour page provides a detailed list to help you understand what is covered before booking.
