Day 1: Journey to Argentina and exploring El Calafate

Torres del Paine National Park to Los Glaciares National Park Argentina

The day will start early in the morning with a hearty breakfast before you make your way to Cerro Castillo at 06:30. There, you will board the bus which will take you across the border to Argentina!* You will continue across the Argentinian pampas until your arrival at El Calafate, a beautiful, small town located just outside of Los Glaciares National Park. You will have the whole day free to explore the town and enjoy its attractive restaurants, tango bars, and artisan handicraft markets.
Optional: During the afternoon you will have the chance to take a self-guided tour to Calafate’s Glaciarium Museum and Ice Bar. The Glaciarium is a modern research center devoted to the Patagonian Icefield and its glaciers. It is one of the only glaciological research centers of its kind in the world. From there, you can visit the ‘GlacioBar’, which is constructed entirely of ice, and taste the chill of glacier ice cubes swimming around in your favorite drink.

Overnight stay at Hotel Kosten Aike, El Calafate, Argentina.

*We strongly advise you to research Argentinian border-crossing regulations beforehand. Fees may apply.

Day 2: Visit to Perito Moreno

Los Glaciares National Park

You will be picked up at the hotel and taken to the pier located in “Bajo de las Sombras” port, where you will board a craft which will take you on a 20 min journey across the Rico Arm. This short voyage will afford you the opportunity to experience the stunning views of the glacier’s front wall. Once disembarked, you will be greeted by your bilingual mountain guides who will divide you into groups of no more than 20, lead you towards the edge of the glacier and demonstrate how to use your pair of crampons. You will then embark on your 2-hour, once in a lifetime trek through the breathtakingly blue landscape of glaciers, lagoons, and streams, the flora and fauna of which will be thoroughly explained to you by your expert guides. The trekking is moderate: the ice surface over which you will walk is irregular but firm and safe. After the glacier trek, a short, leisurely stroll through the forest will bring you back to the shelter.
Important Note: Due to operational insurance issues, the age limit for doing the mini-ice trekking on Perito Moreno Glacier is 65 years old. If a passenger exceeds this age then an alternative excursion to the Glacier will be arranged.

****Alternatively you can choose to do the "Big Ice" glacier hike also on Glacier Perito Moreno(additional costs apply - age limit 18 to 50 years old).

The vast unbroken stretch of ocean to the west and south of the South American continent leaves the Patagonian Andes very exposed to the saturated winds that circle the Antarctic landmass. Also, both the strong marine and the South Patagonic Ice field influence make the weather hard to predict. In spring or early summer, fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning, bringing rains and eventually snow. Even in summer (December to March) you be prepared for cold- strong winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfalls. The summer’s average temperature is 11ºC/52ºF (24ºC max, 2ºC min).
