Itinerary

Day 1: Lake district arrival

Lake District, Chile

We start our trip in Puerto Montt in the morning and meet our guide at the airport. We drive to Puerto Varas, a beautiful town 15 minutes away on the shore of Lake Llanquihue. Just before entering the town, we get a great view of the lake and the Osorno Volcano. Puerto Varas has a German architectural style due to significant German immigration in the early twentieth century and is known for its delicious German kuchen.

From Puerto Varas, we drive around Lake Llanquihue to Frutillar, passing the German colony monument. In Frutillar, we visit the Colonial museum and stroll along the promenade, then head to Puerto Octay before returning to our hotel in Puerto Varas.

Overnight Hotel Puelche 4*, Puerto Varas.

Lake District, Chile

Today we visit Alerce National Park, home to ancient Alerce trees over 3,000 years old. We drive down Los Colonos route to Puerto Montt, passing Alerce town, then meet the Carretera Austral. This road through Northern Patagonia is lined with fauna, flora, and Andean lowlands, along with small European-style farming villages.

We arrive at the park and hike various trails. If lucky, we see Chilean deer, puma, pudú, condor, and more. We stop for lunch at a picnic spot, then continue hiking among ancient trees, overlooking the lake. We return to Puerto Varas for dinner and enjoy a pisco sour as a reward.

Note: From April to September, expect rain and mud, so bring neccesary gear!

After taking in the view, we head back down the hill and start our trek along the El Solitario trail, a small track formed by lava which weaves its way through an ancient native forest. After 6 kilometers of this undulating trail, with constant views of the volcanoes and the lake, we reach Saltos de Petrohue, close to Lake Todos Los Santos.
