Itinerary

Full Day King Penguin Viewing

Porvenir, Chile

The trip begins with a ferry sailing through the Magellan Strait  to Chilota Bay in Tierra del Fuego. Upon our arrival, we will begin our journey to Porvenir, where we can visit places like Plaza Selk'nam, Plaza de Armas, the Municipal Museum, Mirador Hain and Laguna Santa María.

We will continue heading towards the King Penguin Nature Reserve, located 120 kilometers from Porvenir. On the way it will be possible to see the coast of Bahía Inútil, where we can observe guanacos, sheep and birds such as the caiquén and the flamingo. King penguins are truly spectacular individuals, with their typical white, black and orange-hued markings on the head, bill and chest. This species is between 85 and 95 cm tall and weighs around 15 kg. It is a once in a lifetime experience!

Once we say goodbye to our penguin friends, we will head towards the town of Cerro Sombrero (100 km) where you will have the opportunity to see its emblematic architecture and the monument to the Oil Worker along with other attractions. After this we will return to the mainland through Primera Angostura.

This experience ends with a visit to Gregorio Bay, where the remains of the Vapor Amadeo and the Ambassador Boat are located. In front of them you can see the Estancia San Gregorio, the first cattle ranch in Chilean Patagonia. From here, we will start the return to the city of Punta Arenas.

Weather

The vast unbroken stretch of ocean to the west and south of the South American continent leaves the Patagonian Andes very exposed to the winds that circle the Antarctic landmass, making the weather hard to predict. Fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning; even in summer (December to March) you should come prepared to find strong cold winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfall. Summer’s average temperature is 11ºC (52ºF), ranging between 2 to 24ºC (35 to 75ºF).
