Itinerary

Full Day King Penguin Viewing

Porvenir, Chile

The trip begins with a ferry ride across the Magellan Strait to the Chilota Bay of Tierra del Fuego. After being picked-up from there, we will begin our drive around the Bahía Inútil (Inútil Bay) for roughly 1.5 hours. Afterwards, we will take a short break at the British Pioneers Cemetery and then go to King Penguin Park. The King Penguins are truly a sight to behold, sporting their typical black and white markings with splashes of vibrant orange across their head, beak, and chest. The penguins stand between 85 to 95 cm high and weigh around 15 kg. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

After saying goodbye to our penguin friends, we will enjoy a delicious box lunch and then head to Porvenir, where we can enjoy an incredible panoramic view. Here we will spot the Strait of Magellan, a city overlook and the lagoons, as well as two sculptures that represent an ancient ceremony of the indigenous Selknam people. After taking in the wonderful surroundings, we will go to the Cordero Rusque Museum and take roughly 30 minutes to explore the region’s unique history and archeology. Then we will take a brief hike to Laguna Estromatolitos and soak in the natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego. This is our last stop of the day and afterwards we will head back to the ferry.

Weather

The vast unbroken stretch of ocean to the west and south of the South American continent leaves the Patagonian Andes very exposed to the winds that circle the Antarctic landmass, making the weather hard to predict. Fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning; even in summer (December to March) you should come prepared to find strong cold winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfall. Summer’s average temperature is 11ºC (52ºF), ranging between 2 to 24ºC (35 to 75ºF).
