Itinerary

El Morado Horseback Ride

Cajón del Maipo, Central Andes

After an 8 AM pick-up from your hotel in Santiago, we’ll head out of the city across the Maipo Valley and towards the Andes Mountains. It's surprising how quickly the big city turns into a quaint countryside. The spectacular El Morado Reserve is nestled at the foot of a towering mountain, exemplifying the dramatic rock formations of the Andes. It's a truly breathtaking sight and one of the lesser known sites in Chile, adding to the mystical mountain feel.

Our trusty local horses will be ready and waiting for us when we arrive. They are very gentle and you'll feel at ease as we ride y through rocky slopes dotted with wildflowers and moss and are surrounded by towering mountains. Condors soar overhead with wingspans of up to 3 meters and small yellow Cometocinos fly by as we follow an icy river up through mountainous paths. After 3 hours of horseback ascent, we will arrive at the summit and are met with the spectacular sight of an enormous glacier and glacial lake. We will feast on a tasty box lunch while soaking up the view and relaxing from the climb. Afterwards, we’ll begin our descent, arriving back at the park entrance around 5 PM and boarding our comfy van for the scenic ride back to the hotel in Santiago.

Weather

Central Chile has a mild and temperate climate. The warmest months are November to February when temperatures reach 29ºC (84ºF).. Nevertheless, during this low mountain trek the temperature might drop considerably if the day is cloudy and the wind blows strongly, reaching a low of up to 15ºC 59ºF).

What you need to bring

Long pants, tennis or trekking shoes, wind-blocking fleece jacket, sun hat and sunscreen.

The horses

We use Chilean horses that are shorter, but equally as strong as European horses. These animals are used to riding on rough and sloped terrain and behave very well. The saddles used were adapted locally many years ago from Arab and Spanish saddles and they are lined with leather that does not heat up in the sun and provides maximum comfort.

Itinerary modifications

We reserve the right to change the order of the itinerary under the sole discretion of the trip guide and based on operational considerations. The trip guide can also modify, change or eliminate part of the itinerary based on safety/weather considerations.
