At 4.30am on Saturday the 28th of September 2013 the first set of EcoCamp’s marathon runners
made their way bleary-eyed to the EcoCamp van with the adrenaline kicking in as they drove towards the startline of their ultra 63k marathon! The rest followed afterwards in groups according to the distance they were running and by 9am everyone was feeling the adrenaline, as they raced their way through Torres del Paine National Park against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, gushing rivers and windswept plains.
The night before the race EcoCamp runners were treated to a pasta party with four different types of pastas and sauces and after their running efforts EcoCamp marathoners were treated to a three course lunch at EcoCamp!
After a relaxing evening with some well-deserved beers 17 of the group set off on bikes to Laguna Azul the following day to enjoy a barbecue overlooking the majestic towers!
EcoCamp’s 27 participants all did very well and we commend them for their fantastic effort. In the ultra marathon we want to give a shout out to John Focke who finished the 63k race in 7:05:20.4 and came 8th in his Male Puma category, to Claire Johnson who finished in 8:00:15.5 coming 4th in the Female Huemul category and to Norbert Blobel and Marcos Rangel who finished 12th and 13th respectively in the Male Huemul category. You can check out the full list of ultra marathon results
on the Patagonia International Marathon site, including famous runners such as ultra marathoner Kristin Moehl, winner of the women’s race, and Ultra-Trail Runner Ryan Sanders who came 1st overall.
All EcoCamp participants received a personal letter from co-owner Yerko Ivelic
, who ran 10k in last year’s marathon. EcoCamp host Victor
said the marathon was a big success and he’s already looking forward to next year’s race!
