Santiago de Chile is located in the central zone, with panoramic views of the Andes Mountains. The city has a lot of cultural and historical heritage, with interesting museums and monuments. Lively markets, architecturally-interesting neighbourhoods and park hills line the city. The main city centre attractions include the Central Market, main square “Plaza de Armas” and its historic buildings including the Cathedral and the Central Post Office, the ex-National Congress and the Courts of Justice, government palace “La Moneda” and its square and Santa Lucía hill, where the city was founded by Spanish conqueror Pedro de Valdivia in 1541.
Lively bohemian neighbourhoods Bellavista, north of the river, and Lastarria are very popular with tourists and form the centre of downtown dining and nightlife.
Next to the Pacific Ocean, 112km east from the capital, are cities Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. Valparaíso is a famous port city steeped in rich cultural heritage. It is UNESCO protected and is renowned for its unique architecture, Pacific views, and life of Nobel prize winning poet Pablo Neruda.
Viña del Mar, known as the “Garden City”, is a popular destination with Santiago’s high society who have their beach houses here overlooking the ocean. The annual Viña del Mar International Song Festival which takes place here every summer is considered the most important musical event in Latin America.
