Nature has produced a fascinating land
where blue and emerald lakes, hotsprings, wild rivers, moist jungle and perfect
cone volcanoes extend in a chain over 360 km (225 miles) from Pucon to Puerto
Montt. Within this unique landscape we find a large temperate rain forest ecosystem,
home of the rare giant tree species (Alerce, Araucaria, Coihue, Cipres, Canelo,
Palo Santo etc.), diverse birds (Chucao, Cachana, Traro etc.) and rare mammals.
The lake district is also a zone of Mapuche (native Indian) reservations.
The Chilean Lake District offers the best in outdoor sports, family vacations
and soft or hard adventure. Walk the trekking and hiking trails, kayak or raft
the whitewater, ride the Andes, swim in or cruise on the lakes.
At this part of southern Chile nature has produced a fascinating land where blue
& emerald lakes, moist jungle and perfect cone volcanoes extend in a chain
over 360 km /225 miles from Villarrica to Puerto Montt. More than 10.000 years
ago the gigantic glaciers of the Andes moved away from this area, spreading great
barriers of rock and mire that gave birth to the lakes. The volcanoes, once below
the glacier shield, became active and new ones appeared, higher and with slender
lines and a perfect cone. Then, natural jungle flowered, strong and diverse on
this volcanic and porous soil.
