A day of low wind, which has allowed helicopter flight and reduced the speed of the fire’s expansion, together with moderately intense rain have helped to control the fire in Torres de Paine National Park. The authorities predict that today they will have three of the six remaining focus areas under control and should these conditions remain, we will be close to having the fire under complete control.
Meanwhile, the authorities are holding a technical meeting which could permit the partial reopening of the park in the unaffected areas. We expect this news to be confirmed and hope to reopen EcoCamp on Tuesday, the third of January.
Guests who were evacuated from EcoCamp and who have not returned to their home countries are currently staying in either Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales. Casada Expediciones and EcoCamp have programmed activities for them, such as tours and treks, and tonight all guests will celebrate a special New Year’s Eve dinner, which we have organized for them.
